Malawi’s current situation

With Malawi experiencing fuel shortages in the year 2011, several commodities’ prices have been raised. This has also forced many employees to demand an increment in their salaries. Members of Parliament have also demanded a lump sum salary.

How much are the members asking for?

The Members of Parliament in Malawi say they are the only MPs in the world who are lowly paid hence would want their salary revised. The MPs are now demanding a proposed one million Malawi Kwacha, according to a proposal tabled in Parliament on November 15, 2011, the Public Appointments and Declaration of Assets Report.

What is the breakdown of the salary?

MPs want a lump sum of K521,500 per month

K250,000 - motor vehicle maintenance allowance

K100,000 - utility allowance

K60,000 - constituency allowance

K45,000 - office allowance

Daily allowance – K30,000

Vehicle loan: K6 million

Clean Wage: K1 million

Current MPs benefits

Fuel allowance – K20,000

Subsistence allowance per night – K 20,000

Sitting Allowance every day – K5,000

Basic Pay – K126,500
