As an employee you cannot avoid sickness at some point. But the question is, do you get support from your employer?

Some companies do not provide assistance to their employees in Malawi, but others have a healthcare facility. There are private sector companies, such as Lafarge Cement and Admarc, which have their own clinics with doctors where employees can seek free medical attention.

However, there are other companies that do not have clinics and hence offer healthcare to employees through medical aid. In Malawi there is the Medical Aid Society of Malawi (Masm) which is optional. An employee can choose to join or not.

An employee at Blantyre Newspapers Limited says this is a good medical scheme for employees as it gives them a chance to visit hospitals which are expensive. He says there are private hospitals such as Mwaiwathu and Adventist where he cannot afford to pay cash, and thus the best is to use the medical aid scheme. He says through the medical aid scheme he is also able to take his family to these hospitals.

For the Medical Aid Society of Malawi (Masm), the company pays for 100 percent for membership of an employee, and 80 percent for family members. The remaining 20 percent is paid by the employee and is usually deducted every month from their salary.
