A salary is the money that someone is paid each month by their employer. Salaries in the private sector and civil service are first approved before being given to employees. This is mainly is done by the board.

An employee shall not be eligible for their full salary if there is any period of absence without leave or a reasonable excuse.

Payment of Salary

Salaries are paid according to the job grade to which the employee is appointed.

In most private sectors in Malawi, salaries are paid on the 25th of each month covering the full current month. If however, the 25th falls on a Saturday or public holiday, salary payments are made on the preceding business day. If it falls on a Sunday, payments are made on the following day.

In government institutions, employees get their salaries on the 31st of every month. When a member of staff gives notice to resign from a company, or a company gives notice to terminate a contract, the final salary is paid on the date that the resignation or termination takes effect.

Deductions and Adjustments

Income tax is the main deduction from employees’ gross salaries in both the private sector and civil service.

In the private sector salaries are reviewed annually.
