It is important for the private sector and the civil service to look after employees so that they can perform their duties to the maximum. Employees need to stay healthy, but this means their workplaces must be healthy too.

Malawi has an Occupation Safety Health and Welfare Act of 1997, which entails companies and the civil service to inform, instruct and supervise their employees for their better health. The Acts says:

  • It is the duty of every employer to ensure the safety, health and welfare at work of all employees
  • The company or private sector needs to provide the necessary equipment for safety and health
  • It is wrong for employers to subject employees to a poor environment which may lead to them getting sick
  • The Conditions of Service says a company needs to provide protective clothing and other accessories to any employee who by reason of the nature of their job needs these items
  • Malawi’s Employment Act says any employee who subjects its employees to poor conditions faces a penalty
