What is an HIV/Aids workplace policy?

This is a framework developed by various institutions to manage and control the further spread of HIV/Aids among staff and ensure that those affected together with their families are supported fully.

Where does this policy apply?

This policy applies to all operations of the institutions, all members of staff, their spouses and children under 21 and two other dependants regardless of their sex, race, colour, profession, location, gender, religious belief, district or region of origin or any other status.

Which are some of the institutions in Malawi which have developed workplace policies?

Some of the companies which have developed workplace policies in Malawi include Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra), Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and Blantyre Newspapers Limited. 

As an example of a policy, the goals of the HIV/Aids workplace policy for Blantyre Newspapers Limited includes to provide HIV/Aids information and education to all members of staff, their families and surrounding communities. It also aims to provide nutritional, medical and psycho-social support to members of staff and their families living with HIV/Aids, and to eradicate any form of stigma and discrimination against employees affected or infected by any type of ailment.

What is to be done regarding stigma and discrimination?

Through this policy, institutions ensure that no employee is stigmatised, discriminated against or victimised due to real or perceived HIV status.

What about work performance and reasonable accommodation?

The policy responds to the changing health status of staff by making reasonable accommodation where possible; for instance, a member of staff may continue to work as long as they are able to perform their duties safely and in accordance with accepted performance standards. If a staff member with HIV/AIDS is unable to perform his or her tasks adequately, the manager or supervisor with the support of Human Resources department must resolve the problem according to normal procedures regarding poor performance and ill health.
