Sick Leave

About Sick leave and Labour Laws on Mywage Malawi.

By Sam Banda Jnr

According to Malawi’s terms and conditions of service, sick leave is paid leave and for an employee to get it, he or she requires a valid medical certificate certifying that the employee is unfit to report for duties and giving a description of the type of illness or injury.

While some employers offer more days for sick leave for an employee to recover, other institutions give only 15 days per year. Some companies follow the following rule on sick leave:

  • Full pay for the first 6 months, half pay for the next three months, and no pay for the following three months.

In the public sector, if an employee is sick for longer than a year, management can decide whether the employee’s service should be terminated or not. In the private sector, sick leave is sometimes extended to longer than a year, under certain circumstances.
